SUN
TOURS, a member of the Petra Group of companies, was
established in 1980. The
initial function intended for Sun Tours was to link
Jordan and Egypt through the Red Sea by ferryboats owned by the Petra Group. Petra Group today includes a
network of companies that serve needs falling under three main categories:
transport, trade and tourism. The shipping and transport companies cover a wide
range of activities. These include ship ownership and management, shipping,
clearing, forwarding, canvassing and other agency services. In the field of
trade it specializes in the representation and marketing of international
products, commerce and general trading, in addition to the sale and purchase of
international basic commodities.
Sun
Tours carries on the business of travel and tourism investment. It operates as air travel agents,
charterers, and package tour agents organizing tours to Jordan, Egypt,
and elsewhere. It should be emphasized that companies within Petra Group are
structured to enjoy independent management, each with its own Chief Executive,
senior staff and support personnel, who are collectively responsible for the
day to day administration of their business.
Sixteen years later, the initial function of Sun Tours is
still in operation today; the ferries transport 1.2 million passengers per
year. Sun Tours
did not stop at passenger transport only, but with offices in Amman, Aqaba and Sharm el Sheikh, it started
promoting incoming tourism to Jordan, also outgoing tourism to many
destinations, including Egypt, Sinai, Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus, and the far
east. As a member of the IATA, Sun Tours continues to issue airline tickets to
destinations worldwide.
In the middle of
1995 a new generation of fast boats was added to the Petra Group's fleet of
ships. The 35 knots, 265 passenger luxurious catamaran was a welcomed addition
and was immediately put into service between the Red Sea ports of Aqaba, Jordan
and Nuweiba, in Egypt.
Sun Tours, being the GSA for the Turbo Catamaran, was able
to
increase tourist movement in the region both incoming and outgoing. Now a
same day excursion to Petra from Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab, and Nuweiba became
possible. Also, a same day excursion to St. Catherine Monastery in the Sinai is
also possible with the Turbo Cat. Both excursions are being run by Sun Tours.
Sun Tours is planning to expand the catamaran services to the remaining Red Sea tourist
destination ports like Taba and Eilat. Both ports' services are scheduled to
begin in the new millennium.
