The Dead Sea Medical Centre, on the grounds of the Dead Sea Spa Hotel, is one of the leading facilities in Jordan for medical treatment built around the unique elements of the sea. "We use absolutely no drugs," says Hamed Alawi, a doctor at the centre. The sun, air, water and mud of the Dead Sea serve as the foundation for treatments tailored to each patient.

While Alawi is a Vienna-trained doctor who has also extensively studied natural medicine, he says one "can't really study at university treatments that are used here" at the centre. Rather, treatments are "the result of our special experience here." Rich in salts, minerals and algae, the mud, for example, is used in a variety of treatment programmes. The dark colour of the mud allows it to absorb and hold heat and moisture, with the effect of improved blood circulation, relief from joint pain and relaxed muscles. The natural tar found in the mud also helps relieve joint problems which arthritis patients suffer from.
